Quarter turn past snug. May 8, 2004 · You're right on about the oil filter, but for the drain bolt, "make it as tight as you can" isn't the best advice as you could potentially strip it. Snug tight is defined by the AISC/RCSC as when all the plies in a connection have been pulled into firm contact by the bolts in the joint, and the bolts have been tightened sufficiently to prevent removal of the nuts without a wrench. With only hand tight as the inspection criteria, Snug-tight may begin with a pretension that is negligible or zero.
